Unfortunately, you the merchant pays for the customer's miles/rewards via inflated base costs for those rewards cards. For example, the Interchange Rate (bank's profits) for a standard swiped Visa card is 1.54%, but for a rewards card it is 1.65%. That 0.11% differential is what the bank uses to pay for those rewards. You are not allowed to ask a customer for a specific card type and you also cannot surcharge for certain card types.
